Briefly describe the basic structure of power cables?

Feb 22, 2024

The basic structure of power cables mainly consists of four parts: core (conductor), insulation layer, shielding layer and protective layer.

Core: This is the conductive part of the power cable, used to transmit electrical energy, and is the main part of the cable.

Insulating layer: The insulating layer electrically isolates the core from the ground and between different phases of the core to ensure power transmission, and is an indispensable component of the power cable structure.

Shielding layer: Power cables with 15KV and above generally have a conductor shielding layer and an insulation shielding layer. The function of the conductor shielding layer is to suppress the impact of electromagnetic fields on the surrounding environment, while the insulation shielding layer is to protect the insulation layer from external damage.

Protective layer: The role of the protective layer is to protect the power cable from the intrusion of foreign impurities and moisture, as well as to prevent direct damage to the power cable from external forces.

The above is the basic structure of power cables. The design and manufacturing of cables require ensuring the integrity and functionality of these parts to ensure the safe and effective operation of the cable.
