TPE Cable Hardness

May 27, 2026

What Is TPE Hardness?

One big advantage of TPE cable is: hardness can be adjusted. The same material can be made very soft or very hard

Hardness is measured in Shore A and Shore D.

Shore A: For soft materials (higher number = harder)

Shore D: For hard materials (higher number = harder)

Level 1: Extra Soft (Shore A 40-60)

How it feels:

  1. Squeezes flat easily
  2. Can be tied into a knot
  3. Like cooked noodles

Application

Reason

Earphone cables

Comfortable, tangle-free

Medical device cables

Soft and safe for skin

Wearable devices

Skin-friendly

Level 2: Medium (Shore A 70-85)

How it feels:

  1. Bounces back when pressed
  2. Won't flatten, but bends easily
  3. Like a car tire

Application

Reason

Phone charging cables

Good daily feel

Power tool cables

Wear-resistant, easy to store

General industrial cables

Balances softness and strength

Level 3: Hard (Shore A 90+ or Shore D)

How it feels:

  1. Almost no squeeze
  2. Very straight, hard to bend
  3. Like a chopstick or toothbrush handle

Application

Reason

Industrial plugs

Holds shape

Cable outer protective sleeves

Impact and crush resistant

Connector housings

Replaces hard plastic

Common Mistakes

❌ Mistake 1: Softer is always better
No. TPE that is too soft has poor abrasion resistance. It will tear after dragging on the ground a few times.

✅ Truth: Hardness depends on the application. Earphones need soft. Construction cables cannot be too soft.

❌ Mistake 2: Same hardness means same material
Shore A 70 from different manufacturers can feel completely different (some more elastic, some stickier).

✅ Truth: Don't just read the number – get a sample and feel it yourself.

❌ Mistake 3: Harder TPE is more expensive
Hardness has no direct relationship with price. Expensive TPE usually means special formulas for flame retardancy, oil resistance, or low-temperature performance.

✅ Truth: Price depends on the formula, not the hardness.
