Why do most FFC/FPC flat ribbon cables have a temperature resistance rating of 105°C?
If you source flat ribbon cables, you will notice nearly all standard-grade ribbon cables carry a 105 °C temperature rating. Many engineers and buyers ask: why 105°C, not 80°C or 125°C?

1. Material: Heat-modified PVC balances cost and performance
Regular PVC only supports long-term operation up to 80°C. Above this point, insulation becomes soft, ages fast and cracks easily.
Common ribbon cables such as UL2651 use heat-resistant modified PVC. With stabilizers and high-temp plasticizers added, it stably runs at 105°C. It keeps good flexibility and easy-to-strip properties, without the high cost of PTFE high-temperature cables.
2. Real-world equipment operating temperature
Electronic cabinets, power supplies and controllers build heat inside. Internal temperature often hits 50-85°C, plus extra heat from current flow.
If you use 80°C-rated cables, wires run right at their material limit. Aging and failure will happen quickly. A 105 °C rating creates a safe temperature buffer for long-term service.
3. UL safety standard fixed temperature grades
UL electronic wire standards do not offer intermediate grades like 90°C or 95°C. Main options are 80°C, 105°C, 125°C and 150°C.
UL2651 ribbon cable adopts the widely-accepted 105°C /300V specification. This universal rating simplifies global certification for export products.
4. Application grade selection guide
80°C PVC ribbon cable: Low cost, only fit low-heat consumer electronics
105°C modified PVC ribbon cable: Industry mainstream. Suitable for instruments, control cabinets and most general electronic internal wiring. Best balance of performance and cost.
125°C+ PTFE high-temperature cable: For special high-heat environments. Higher cost, unnecessary for regular wiring.

Important note
105°C stands for continuous long-term working temperature, not constant ambient temperature you can expose it to.
Do NOT use 105°C PVC ribbon cable for environments above 100°C. Pick PTFE insulated wires for those high-temperature conditions.
