What is the difference between PVC and PUR as cable outer sheaths

Mar 24, 2026

In the cable industry, the outer sheath of the cable determines the service life, applicable environment and cost performance of the cable. PVC and pur are the two most commonly used sheathing materials in cables at present. This paper will compare the performance differences and application scenarios of PVC and pur cable sheaths in detail, and share several practical methods that can be quickly identified without professional equipment.

PVC cable sheath

PVC, namely polyvinyl chloride, is the most widely used universal material in the cable industry. Traditional PVC sheaths are low-cost, easy to process, with basic insulation and flame retardancy, and are mostly used for conventional fixed laying cable products. However, the mechanical properties of modern modified PVC, high elastic PVC and wear-resistant PVC have been greatly improved, which can meet the dynamic use scenarios of medium strength.

PUR cable sheath

PUR, or polyurethane, is a high-performance elastomer material, which is famous for its super wear resistance, oil resistance, high flexibility and low temperature resistance. It is mostly used in high demand equipment such as extreme working conditions, high-strength drag chains and robots. The comprehensive performance of PUR is stronger, but the cost is higher, and the flame retardancy is generally lower than that of standard PVC.

Core differences between PVC and PUR cable sheaths

1. Abrasion resistance and tear resistance traditional PVC: General abrasion resistance, suitable for static fixed wiring.

High performance modified PVC: the abrasion resistance is greatly improved, which can cope with moderate frequency bending and slight friction scenarios, close to the ordinary PUR level.

PUR: Top abrasion and tear resistance, suitable for high-strength drag chain, continuous friction and high dynamic equipment.

2.Flexibility and low temperature resistance

PVC: it is usually gentle and has good toughness, and will gradually harden at low temperature.

High performance cold resistant PVC: it can adapt to lower temperatures and meet most indoor and outdoor conventional environments.

PUR: it is still very soft at low temperature and not easy to crack. It is suitable for long-term use in extreme cold and outdoors.

3.Oil and chemical resistance

Standard PVC: oil resistant base, no problem in short-term contact with oil stains.

Oil resistant modified PVC: it can cope with the mild oil pollution environment of general machine tools and engineering machinery.

PUR: excellent oil resistance, coolant resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, suitable for heavy oil pollution environment.

4. Flame retardant performance

PVC: natural flame retardant, self extinguishing when off fire, is the mainstream choice of low-voltage control cables.

PUR: conventional models are generally flame retardant and require special modification to reach high flame retardant level.

5. Weather resistance and UV resistance

PVC: ordinary model is easy to age outdoors for a long time; Weather resistant modified PVC can meet short-term outdoor use.

PUR: weather resistant and UV resistant, suitable for long-term outdoor or harsh environment.

6. Cost and performance price ratio

PVC: lower cost, strong stability, low after-sales and replacement costs.

Pur: the cost is obviously higher, and it is suitable for scenarios that must be used with high intensity.
