What is the difference between direct current and alternating current

DC cable,DC cable is a kind of conductor specially used to transmit direct current. It is widely used in various electronic equipment, new energy systems and specific industrial fields to supply power for equipment requiring stable voltage and current.

 

DCand AC are the two basic forms of power. They are significantly different in many aspects:

 

1, Core features and working principle

The current direction of direct current  remains fixed, and the voltage is relatively stable, and will not change with time. The direction and magnitude of alternating current   will change periodically, and it is generally transmitted in the form of sine wave.

In practical use, the AC voltage can be easily increased and decreased through the transformer, which is more suitable for long-distance and high power transmission scenarios such as the State Grid. DC power has less loss during transmission, and is mainly used for equipment and scenes that require high power supply stability and short distance.

2.Application scenarios

Application of DC cable/power supply: mainly used for equipment that requires stable DC power supply. Commonly seen in:

Charging or power supply for electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, routers, LED lights, etc.

New energy system: The electricity generated by solar photovoltaic systems is direct current, which requires DC cables for transmission.

Other fields: electric vehicle charging (DC fast charging), data centers, communication systems, etc.

Application of AC cable/power supply: mainly used for power distribution and driving.

Household and industrial power supply: The wall sockets we use in our daily lives provide AC power, which is used for refrigerators, air conditioners, lighting, and industrial motors.

Power transmission: The power grid transports electricity from power plants to thousands of households, mainly relying on alternating current.

 

3, Cable design and structure differences

Due to the different current characteristics transmitted, DC cable and AC cable are also different in design:

Insulation requirements: AC cable will produce alternating magnetic field and skin effect due to alternating current, so it requires higher performance of its insulation and shielding layer to reduce energy loss and electromagnetic interference. The electric field distribution and loss mechanism of DC cable are different, so the insulation requirements are relatively focused, and the long term withstand voltage stability is more emphasized.

Polarity: DC cables have definite positive and negative poles. While AC cable has no polarity, it is necessary to distinguish live wire, zero wire and ground wire.

In summary, DC cable is the transmission carrier of DC power, and its core feature is to provide stable and direction invariant current. The fundamental difference between it and AC (alternating current) is that the direction of current and whether it changes with time, which leads to differences in transmission efficiency, applicable scenarios and cable design. Whether to use DC or AC depends on the specific equipment requirements and application scenarios.
